Project Notes: Big Boots Theatre
Big Boots Theatre Company, founded by Sebastian Pałka, approached me to help develop their brand identity. The company’s mission centres on a strong commitment to equality and diversity, with a core belief that embracing difference is a valuable asset. Big Boots Theatre Company strives to foster artistic growth by creating an inclusive environment where theatre makers can freely pursue their dreams and express their true selves, regardless of background or identity.
Sebastian wanted the branding to reflect both the company’s foundational principles—passion, talent, commitment, and respect—and to pay homage to his Polish roots, recognising the company’s journey and development. After discussions about the company’s ethos and story, we agreed on a clear direction for the brand. The final design concept incorporated elements that symbolised both growth and progress, as well as a subtle reference to the idea of “walking in the shoes of those who have come before,” acknowledging the generations of artists who have paved the way.
This brand identity not only captures the essence of the theatre company’s values but also highlights its forward-thinking, inclusive approach, giving a nod to the past while setting the stage for a bold, creative future. The design has since become a visual representation of Big Boots Theatre Company’s commitment to creating a space where diversity thrives and where theatre makers are empowered to bring their authentic selves to the stage.
The brief was to design a logo that was not only visually striking and bold but also versatile enough to be applied across a range of mediums. This included practical uses such as stickers for paper wraps, takeaway coffee cups, and other packaging, ensuring consistency and recognition at every customer touchpoint. The goal was to craft a design that would resonate with the café’s artisanal roots and reflect the high-quality, personalized coffee experience it offers, while standing out amidst Hackney’s dynamic coffee culture.
In addition to its functional aspects, the branding needed to embody the café’s ethos—celebrating craftsmanship, community, and the love of coffee. The logo was envisioned as a cornerstone of the business’s visual identity, serving as a bold statement of their commitment to quality and creativity.
